BIG TIME money maker at Publix 1/30

So the new Green Advantage flyer started yesterday 1/29. So last night I ran to Publix to get some money maker deals before they were all gone, but I was too late. I did find a few things that gave me about + $4.00. So I bought a can of chili, 1/2 gal of milk, and some corn chips all for just $86. Here's how it went:

(2) Vivarin (caffeine pills)
sale: $3.19
used: $2/1 IP (go here, click savings, and fill out info to print)
used: $5/2 from Publix green ad
total: + $2.62

(2) Alka Seltzer
sale: $3.39
used: $2/1 from 1/2 SS
used: $5/2 from Publix green ad
total: + 2.22

(1) 1/2 gallon milk
total: $2.49 (yes, outrageous, but is was free, and it was 1 of 2 things that was on our list)

(1) bag of Santitas
total: $2.00

(1) can of chili
total: $1.25 (yes, there are Qs out there for this but I only needed 1 can and didn't have the Q with me)

SPENT: $0.86
SAVED: $18.54

But today...
I went to a different Publix (1 I never shop at) with hopes that they would have the meds I needed to make some moolah, and they did!!! Here's how it went:

 (4) Aleve
sale: $2.99 (which I was not aware of until checkout, so it WAS a small money maker (MM)...about + $0.50 per box)
used: $1/1 peelies
used: $5/2 from Publix Green Ad. flyer
total: + $2.04

(4) Alka Seltzer
sale: $3.39
used: $2/1 from 1/2 SS
used: $5/2 from Publix Green Ad. flyer
total: + $4.44

(4) Sominex
sale: $3.19
used: $2/1 (go here, click on savings, and fill out form to print)
used: $5/2 from Publix Green Ad. flyer
total: + $5.24

(2) Vivarin
sale: $3.19
used: $2/1 (go here, click on savings, and fill out form to print)
used: $5/2 from Publix Green Ad. flyer
total: + $2.62

NOTE: Everything so far has "made me money" to use on other items in my cart (about $15.00 this time). If you buy MM (money maker) items, they WILL NOT give you money back. You have to use the profit to purchase other items in the same transaction. MM occur when the value of the coupons (Qs) you use, exceed the price of the purchased item.

Here is what I bought to "absorb" my overage:

(1) broccoli
total: $2.69

(1) strawberry
total: $2.99

(1) bag of carrots
total: $1.69

(1) busy bone
sale: $3.00
used: buy 1 beggin strips, get a busy bone free Q (1/23 SS)
total: FREE

(2) Beggin' Strips (10 oz)
sale: bogo @ $5.29
used: $1/1 MQ (from 12/12 SS)
used: $1/1 PQ (go here to print)
total: $1.29

(1 1b.) Boar's Head Tavern Ham
total: $8.70

DRUM ROLL PLEASE...for everything pictured...

SPENT: $3.02
SAVED: $76.22

  1. How do you figure out the money makers and how do you choose which ones you do? Do you get the items that are money makers even if you don't use that particular item? Do you just go through the papers to see what coupons are offered or is there some "science" to this I am missing?

  2. I follow sites such as iheartpublix.com and truecouponing.com to see what coupons are out there. Then I go to the store, find the price of the items and see which items I can buy that will give me overage based on the value of the coupon. And YES, I do buy items that I will never use (such as alka seltxer and gas-x). I just donate them to a food bank, find a friend who needs them, or whatever.
